“As an established and well-known jewellers in two Hampshire locations for many years, we were days away from exchanging contracts on the purchase of two retail units in Andover (one to trade from and one to lease out) just as the credit crunch was about to happen in 2008/09 and I was experiencing deja vu! The difficulties we experienced during the recession of the 1990s came back to haunt me! Understandably some doubts as to the wisdom of this expansion were creeping in.

We had only just joined Rothmans’, but I picked up the phone to speak to Daren Laidlaw and at our meeting he dealt with all of my concerns. He was able to look ahead not only at the next year but at possible issues further down the line and show us the long-term solutions that would overcome any future obstacles, clearly explaining the latest financial regulations relevant to our business.

We are a family company and it is easy to get diverted when we are so busy. But when we can’t see the wood for the trees, we are able to pick up the phone at any time with questions for Daren and his team and they are able to view our concerns objectively and guide us along the right path. Rothmans do not just meet us for half an hour at the end of the year. Over day-long meetings, they support us on every aspect of our business, advising us on the best way forward.

2012 is an exciting year for us as our three children will be working with the business full-time. We have invested in new technology, and as the only independent and the longest-trading jewellers in Eastleigh, we are making a smooth transition into a larger new retail unit at the Swan Centre there, as well as maintaining our outlets at Totton and Andover.

Last year we had our first holiday for five years and that reminded us how much we need to get away to recharge the batteries so this year we are planning two (short) holidays!”
