Jonathan, who grew up in Winchester, joined Rothmans in 2009, having previously worked for a top 5 accountancy firm in London and Southampton. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales whilst working in audit before moving to corporation tax to pursue a keen interest in taxation.
He joined the Winchester office of Rothmans as a general practice Manager with a tax focus, and subsequently qualified as a Chartered Tax Advisor (CTA) with the Chartered Institute of Taxation.
In 2012 he was appointed Director within the firm, being promoted to Partner in April 2016. Jonathan has a broad scope of experience dealing with a wide range of taxation and accounting matters. His portfolio consists of groups of companies, individual companies and businesses, LLPs, CICs, charities, partnerships, sole traders and personal tax individual client work.
Jonathan deals with a wide range of clients/sectors and enjoys providing a relationship-driven service to clients, with tax planning always in mind. His specialisms include start-up businesses, incorporating an existing business, corporation tax planning and R&D tax relief claims. Jonathan also assists clients with monthly and quarterly management accounts and reporting, together with cash flow and P&L forecasting.
Jonathan also advises individuals on personal tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax planning.
Together with his client portfolio, Jonathan has prepared valuations for incorporations and EMI share scheme matters; has dealt with HMRC enquiry/Worldwide Disclosure Facility matters for clients across various taxes; acts as Trustee in relation to Will Trust matters; has prepared and assisted clients with Research & Development (R&D) claims, including HMRC’s Advance Assurance Facility; has assisted clients with tax-efficient corporate structuring of investments such as EIS, SEIS (again under the HMRC Advance Assurance Facility); and tax-efficient share schemes such as EMI.
Jonathan also undertakes Independent Examinations for charities and other organisations.
Recently, Jonathan has been helping businesses get ready for Making Tax Digital coming in from 1 April 2019. He pursues a keen interest in accounting technology, being a Certified Pro Advisor of Intuit QuickBooks Online and a proficient user of Xero.
Jonathan has also been helping employers with their Auto-Enrolment pension responsibilities, in particular with the set up and administration of NEST schemes.
Jonathan is married and lives in Winchester with his family. He is a passionate musician, playing saxophone, piano and guitar and is also a keen sportsman, enjoying football, badminton, golf and tennis.
He became a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales in March 2018.
